Sitemap Generators

Until recently, sitemaps were hand-drawn or script-drawn tree diagrams. Now browsers that support eXtensible markup language (XML) offer more elaborate sitemaps as a special feature. The newer sitemaps provide a hierarchical description of a website, written in the resource description framework (RDF), an XML application still being developed as a standard by the World Wide Web Consortium. For example, Netscape's Mozilla finds RDF sitemaps by looking for tags in your Web pages. This tag tells Mozilla to open the sitemap and then render the site diagram as part of the graphical display of the user agent. While sitemaps themselves may not be the niftiest things in the world, they do occupy a noteworthy position on the Web's timeline as one of the first implementations of RDF. (Source: Webtrenz)

Simply put, a sitemap lists every page/URL on your website. A sitemap written in XML or TXT can help search engine spiders find all relative content on your site, while an HTML sitemap, linked from your home page, can help visitors to your site easily find the information they need.

It is important for your website to have a sitemap file on hand for search engine spiders to crawl. As the sitemap will contain a list of every URL on your website, this handy file immediately offers a search spider information on all the active URLs on site. Hence, the spider will know where to continue crawling and gathering data when it visits your website.

Sitemaps may be created in HTML, XML, or as a TXT file. Once you have created a sitemap for use, you can submit your sitemap to Google and track Google's activity with it.
